1. Controller

2. Hosting and server logs

WikiGolf runs on a server operated by us at Hetzner Online GmbH in Germany. When you open the site, the server processes technically necessary data: IP address, timestamp, requested address, browser type and operating system. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (legitimate interest in secure and stable operation). These logs are not combined with your game data.

3. Anonymous game ID (cookie)

So that your progress, streak and stats can be attributed to the same browser, we create a random identifier (UUID) on your first visit and store it in a first-party cookie named wg_pid (HttpOnly, lifetime approx. 13 months). The identifier contains no information about you and is not linked to any other data. It is required for the game to work, which is why no consent banner is needed (§ 25(2) no. 2 TDDDG). The legal basis for the processing is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR.

If you delete the cookie, your browser counts as a new anonymous player: streak and stats start over. Earlier results can no longer be accessed because we hold no other identifying information.

4. Game data

Together with the anonymous identifier we store in our database (PostgreSQL on the same server): the daily round played, start and finish time, the number of shots and the order of the Wikipedia articles you visited. The path is necessary in order to validate moves on the server — otherwise any result could be faked. From the shot counts of all players we calculate the anonymous daily distribution. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (providing a tamper-proof game). We do not collect names, email addresses or profile data.

5. Wikipedia content

Articles are fetched exclusively by our server from the Wikimedia Foundation and delivered to you after processing. Your browser does not connect to Wikimedia servers, so no data about you is transmitted there. Images are not embedded. If you deliberately open an article's source link, you access Wikipedia directly; the Wikimedia Foundation privacy policy then applies.

6. Usage measurement

For audience measurement we operate two tools on our own servers:

• Plausible Analytics (insights.vinspire.tech)
• Umami Analytics (insights2.vinspire.tech)

Neither sets cookies, neither uses a cross-device identifier and neither collects personal data. Recorded in aggregate: page visited, referring page, approximate region, device type, browser and operating system. No data is passed to third parties and no data is transferred to third countries. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (legitimate interest in a data-minimising analysis of usage).

7. Display settings in your browser

Your choice between the light and dark theme and your language selection are stored locally in your browser and not transmitted to us. You can delete them at any time via your browser settings.

8. Retention

Server logs are kept briefly for troubleshooting and then deleted. Game data is stored for as long as it is needed for stats and the daily distribution. The wg_pid cookie expires after approximately 13 months.

9. Encryption

The connection to WikiGolf is encrypted end to end via TLS (visible as https:// in the address bar).

10. Your rights

You have the right of access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, data portability, and the right to object to processing based on legitimate interests (Art. 15–21 GDPR).

Please note: because we deliberately collect no personal data, we can only answer a request if you provide the anonymous identifier from the wg_pid cookie — it is the only way to locate a record. Without it we cannot make the connection.

You may lodge a complaint with the supervisory authority responsible for us: the State Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information of Baden-Württemberg.
